Cuba - Medianoche Sandwich

So we've finally made it to the end of July! Slowly but surely, I'm catching up.

For my Cuban recipe, I decided to make medianoche sandwiches. I can honestly say that I have never taken two and a half hours to make a sandwich before, but it was absolutely worth the time and effort, and I ended up eating it at the right time- midnight (medianoche). Despite the couple of problems I encountered along the way, this was genuinely one of the best sandwiches I have ever had.

So the main problem I had with this dish was the bread. I made my own bread, because typically medianoche sandwiches are made on special egg loaves, and I wanted to get the full experience of the recipe. The buns themselves turned out very well, but the problem came in frying up the sandwich. The loaves are quite thick, and there are quite a few layers inside the sandwich (it consists of roast pork, deli ham, Swiss cheese, mustard, and dill pickles), and so it was taking quite a while for the sandwich to heat through and the cheese to melt. As a result, the outside of the bread was burnt before the cheese had even started to melt. Regardless, it tasted amazing, and this was all I wanted to eat for about a week after trying it. Overall, I would say this was a success in terms of taste, though maybe not in presentation.
