The Netherlands - Zuurkoolstamppot and Appelflappen

Well, here it is- the very last post of this year long project! Last year my New Years resolution was to learn how to cook and cook more often, and this project was my way of doing that. Now, here we are a whole year later, and I actually kept it up, so here's my meal for the final week of the year- Dutch sauerkraut and bacon stamppot, and apple beignets for dessert.

The Zuurkoolstamppot, to start, was very successful. It was a very comforting and filling dish that I enjoyed quite a lot! Mind you, it's hard to go wrong with potatoes, sauerkraut and bacon, so of course this was going to be delicious. The biggest surprise of this dish though was using celery leaves as a seasoning. I have never used celery leaves in anything before, and to be completely honest, I didn't find that they added all that much flavor to the dish, since it was sort of overpowered by the bacon and sauerkraut. Regardless, it was still very tasty.

The Appelflappen, or apple beignets, were less successful. Even though they looked and smelled lovely, they unfortunately were not cooked all the way through. My brother actually helped me make all the beignets, and after all the time we put into making them, it was pretty disappointing that they didn't turn out. However, it wasn't all bad, because my mom had the idea of cutting them in half and frying them in a pan sort of like pancakes, and that was still pretty delicious (especially with some chocolate spread).

Overall, despite the hiccup with the beignets, I was happy with these Dutch recipes, and the stamppot it one I think I will probably make again!

Seeing as this was the last week of my project, I might do a final sum-up post in the next few days, so stay tuned for that!
