Greece - Chicken Gyros, Pita Bread, and Tzatziki Sauce

This past week I made this absolutely delicious Greek dinner of chicken gyros, pita bread and tzatziki sauce, all from scratch, and the most astonishing part about this entire endeavor was just how easy everything was! As a plus, it's always kind of fun to have a dinner everyone can build themselves.

The nice thing about all three recipes I made was that all of them need to sit for certain amounts of time, so I was able to switch between them pretty seamlessly. I could leave the pita dough to rise while I made the marinade, and then leave the chicken to marinate while I made the tzatziki sauce, and so even though there was quite a bit to do, it didn't feel too overwhelming.

Making the chicken marinade was a particularly satisfying part of this meal, because I have never marinated meat before, and it was nice to learn how easy it is to make something so delicious. It was a little stressful making sure I didn't leave the chicken in it too long though, since the recipe warned that it could make the meat way too salty, but it all worked out. Also, I was able to use what I learned about browning meat from my Irish stew in order to fry up the pieces, which was a bonus!

The part of this dinner I was the most pleased with, though, was the pita bread. These were so easy to make, and they were so lovely and fluffy! In fact, I actually made these twice this week, and I'll probably make them again. They would be a really good thing to make in a big batch for lunches, I think, because they would go so well with so many things.

In fact, there was one trickier part of making this dinner, and I can honestly say it's one I never expected to experience. I discovered while making the tzatziki sauce that grating cucumber is actually quite difficult. I couldn't find a good way to do it that didn't involve scraping my fingers. After struggling through it though, the sauce turned out quite well, even if it was a little watery.

All in all, I was very happy with my Greek dinner, and I'll definitely be making this one again!
