Italy - Tagliatelle Bolognese and Focaccia

This week, my theme was Italian food, and though it was very time consuming, this might have been one of the most delicious meals I have ever made. Following a fun trip to the Italian grocery store in the market nearby, I made Tagliatelle Bolognese and Focaccia bread with fresh herbs and garlic.

My trip to the Italian grocery store with my sister definitely paid off in the end result this week. We splurged a little and got some good Italian noodles and olive oil so both recipes would be even better, and it was delicious. I was particularly surprised that the special pasta we bought only took two minutes to cook rather than the full eight or ten it usually takes for the standard pasta you get in the grocery store.

The olive oil we bought was particularly useful, as the focaccia recipe I used called for a lot of olive oil (a whole 1/2 cup!), and noted that the bread will take on the flavour of the oil used, so I figured the no name brand oil I generally use would probably not have the best result. Overall, the bread was very fun and fairly easy to make, but most importantly, it was delicious, and lasted us for several days.

The pasta sauce lasted several days as well, despite having only made half the recipe. Once again, I was in new territory here, as I had never actually cooked ground beef before. I grew up in a household where we only used the vegetarian substitute ground beef, and so this was a little nerve-wracking. I was relieved to find out that it basically can be left alone and stirred a couple times. The only real issue with this recipe was that it simmers for ages while smelling incredible, which was making my sister and I increasingly more hungry and impatient as the hours crawled by.

All in all, my Italian dinner was a huge success, and I will most likely make this meal again someday!
